The Supplementary Application (Video Interview)

The Supplementary Application is a critical component of the Waterloo admissions process. It consists of two main parts: 

1. Admission Information Form (AIF) : written responses to specific prompts 

and  

2. video interview: This allows the admissions committee to assess applicants' communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and overall fit for the program beyond their academic performance.

Supplementary Application (Video Interview)’s Question Format

The video interview includes a series of structured questions designed to evaluate various aspects of an applicant’s personality and capabilities. Here’s a breakdown of the format:

• Required for Software Engineering Applicants
• Required for students to be considered for a Faculty of Engineering entrance scholarship
• It is highly recommended for all other applicants. 
• You have one pre-recorded question, given prep time and allotted a set amount of time to record your response. Some applicants might see additional program-specific questions

All applicants will be asked the following questions: 

• What experience(s) inside or outside of the classroom motivated you to apply to your chosen engineering program?
• Two non-graded yes/no response questions for scholarship purposes.

Software Engineering applicants will also be asked to compose a written response (600-character limit) to the following question:

• As an applicant to Software Engineering, you are required to demonstrate that you have experience in developing well-structured, modular programs. For every programming language in which you have at least four months of programming experience, list the language, number of months experience you have in using the language (not how long you have known it) and capacity in which you used the language (e.g., courses completed, work experience, self-education).

Application Timeline/Deadline

Key dates for the 2025 application cycle include:

1. January 15, 2025:Application deadline for Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC).

3. May 2025:** Offers of admission are released.

What have you learned about yourself from this interest? How will you apply this knowledge as a student at the University of Waterloo? (900-character limit)

Question 2: Briefly describe a group, organization, or community that you have been involved in, are a member of, and/or have contributed to. What contributions have you made as a member of this group? Were you able to lead, influence others and/or influence decisions for the good of the group and its goals? How has your involvement helped make this community better? (900-character limit)

Question 3: Describe a situation where you were treated unfairly or witnessed someone else being treated unfairly. What did you do at the time and why? Would you do anything differently if the same situation occurred today? Has this event impacted or changed who you are now and if so, how? (900- character limit)

Question 4: What is your primary goal for attending the University of Waterloo? Have you explored, been exposed to, or have experience in the field you plan to pursue and if so, how? Did you turn to anyone for advice in exploring alternative options or backup plans for your goal and if so, how did this person help you? (900-character limit)

Question 5 - Outside the classroom: Please share what you were involved in outside of your studies – at school, in the community, or at home. 

Question 6 - Special achievements, distinctions, and awards: If you have received any academic or non-academic awards or distinctions, please list them. Please provide the size of competition if you know how many people participated.
