The Fermat Mathematics Contest Overview
The Fermat Mathematics Contest, hosted annually by the University of Waterloo's Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC), is a distinguished competition tailored for grade 11 students. It is named in honor of Pierre de Fermat, a renowned French mathematician known for his contributions to number theory. The contest aims to test students' mathematical reasoning, analytical thinking, and creativity through engaging and complex problems.
What Sets the Fermat Contest Apart?
Unlike traditional school assessments, the Fermat Contest prioritizes logical reasoning over simple memorization. The questions are crafted to encourage students to apply their knowledge of algebra, geometry, and number theory in innovative ways. This competition fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills that extend beyond standard classroom learning.
Why Participate in the Fermat Contest?
Taking part in the Fermat Contest offers numerous benefits:
- Sharpens problem-solving and analytical skills
- Boosts confidence in mathematical reasoning
- Enhances university applications
- Encourages exploration of advanced mathematical concepts

Who Should Take Part?
- All grade 11 students
- Students in lower grades who feel prepared for the challenge
- Whether a student is highly advanced or simply eager to sharpen their problem-solving abilities, participating in the Fermat Contest is a valuable and rewarding experience.
