Why the PSE Is Critical for Queen’s Commerce

Getting into the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University is one of the most competitive undergraduate admissions challenges in Canada. With thousands of high-achieving applicants and limited seats, strong grades are no longer enough. That’s why the Personal Statement of Experience (PSE) matters so much—it’s where you prove that you're more than your transcript.

The Queen’s PSE evaluates your leadership, communication skills, self-awareness, and ability to think on your feet. It consists of two major parts: a set of written responses and a video interview. Together, they offer a well-rounded picture of who you are, how you think, and what you’ll bring to the Queen’s community.

What’s Included in the Queen’s Commerce Supplementary Application

Written Component

You’ll be asked to answer 2–3 short interview questions (typically 250–300 words each), such as:

  • Describe a leadership experience that shaped you
  • Share a time you faced a challenge and how you responded
  • What impact have you had on your community or team?
  • Why Queen’s Commerce?

These responses are your opportunity to showcase personal growth, initiative, and values.

Video Response

You’ll also complete a 1–2 minute video interview, recorded live on the application platform. The prompt is unknown in advance and will appear once you start. It often asks you to:

  • Reflect on a value or personal decision
  • Discuss teamwork or conflict
  • Demonstrate quick thinking or self-reflection

You’ll get 1–2 minutes to prepare and then record your answer in one take.

How to Write an Outstanding PSE Response

Be Real, Not Generic

Use real stories from your life. Choose moments that reflect who you are—not just what you think they want to hear. Avoid clichés and focus on insight and self-awareness.

Use the STAR Method

Structure your answers with STAR:

  • Situation
  • Task
  • Action
  • Result

This keeps your responses clear, concise, and outcome-driven.

Highlight Values and Mindset

Admissions teams are looking for students with curiosity, accountability, leadership potential, and empathy. Use your examples to show how you think and what you value—not just what you’ve done.

Make Every Word Count

With only 250–300 words per interview answer, clarity is everything. Be specific, use active language, and cut filler phrases. Each sentence should move your story forward.

How to Succeed in the Queen’s Video Response

Practice Thinking on Your Feet

The video interview component isn’t about rehearsed speeches—it’s about authenticity and presence. Practice answering random prompts in one take. Focus on structure, clarity, and staying calm under pressure.

Common Practice Prompts:

  • What does leadership mean to you?
  • Describe a time you changed your mind
  • How would a friend describe your greatest strength?
  • What is a challenge you expect in university, and how will you handle it?

Be Yourself, Not a Script

The best videos are confident, natural, and genuine. Don’t memorize. Think, breathe, and speak with intention.

Body Language and Setup Matter

Dress neatly, sit in a well-lit room, and look into the camera. Smile and keep your tone friendly and steady.

Common PSE Mistakes to Avoid

  • Repeating your resume without reflection
  • Writing vague or impersonal answers
  • Ignoring the impact of your actions
  • Over-rehearsing or freezing in the video
  • Skipping revision and feedback
